Inspiration
As a gig worker myself, I struggled to make sense of irregular income across Uber Eats and Upwork—calculating taxes, tracking expenses, and knowing when to work felt impossible. I wanted a tool that spoke directly to US gig workers’ pain points: no generic finance app, just tailored insights for our unique hustle.
What it does
GigWorker Finance centralizes gig income tracking (Uber, Lyft, Fiverr, etc.), automates expense logging (fuel, maintenance, tolls), calculates quarterly self-employment taxes, and uses data to recommend peak earning hours—all with intuitive, animated visuals to make complex numbers simple.
How we built it
I started by mapping core user workflows (income entry, tax calculation, profit analysis) then built a React frontend with TailwindCSS for mobile-first design. Chart.js powered interactive graphs, MongoDB stored user data, and Stripe handled premium subscriptions. Every UI animation (smooth transitions, counter animations) was added to make data feel approachable.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was refining tax calculation logic to align with US self-employment tax rules—ensuring accuracy while keeping the interface simple. I also struggled with making real-time data updates feel seamless across dashboard tabs without lag, which required optimizing React state management.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a tool that turns overwhelming gig economy finances into clear, actionable insights. Users can see net profit per mile/delivery at a glance, and the heatmap for peak working hours has already helped beta testers boost hourly earnings by 15%. The polished, animated UI makes financial tracking feel less like a chore.
What we learned
I deepened my understanding of US self-employment tax regulations and data visualization best practices. Most importantly, I learned to prioritize user-centric design—every feature (color-coded platform badges, icon-based expense categories) was shaped by feedback from fellow gig workers.
What's next for this project
We’re expanding support for more gig platforms, adding personalized tax deduction reminders, and testing a mileage tracking feature. Long-term, we want to integrate with gig platform APIs for automatic income sync—eliminating manual entry entirely and making financial management even easier for gig workers.
