Gig workers are vulnerable to burnout since some work gigs as their primary source of income. It can difficult to juggle jobs causing high stress. Although some choose gigs for the flexibility, it is common to spend a significant amount of your time finding gigs. On the other hand, companies or individuals want to outsource gig workers to get the temporary work done. Not knowing where to look for quality gig workers can be difficult, and finding a secure, structured job can be hard for the workers in the gig economy. Our platform aims to solve this issue by acting as a one-stop-shop for gig workers to find gigs as well as businesses to find the right talent. We offer a variety of services ranging from basic driving, delivery, furniture assembly to dog-walking, cooking, babysitting etc. Any service that you need, we provide!

What it does

Our unique platform simplifies the job and talent finding process through an integrated marketplace that hosts all kinds of gigs presented by individuals and business owners looking to seek a service. Our one-of-a-kind matching algorithm connects these gig workers with businesses, therefore allowing them to make an extra source of income. Furthermore, our platform also offers integration with existing platforms that the workers may already be a part of, like TaskRabbit, Uber and other services, which workers can select if they are interested in when using the platform.

How we built it

We built the web interface using the React framework and firebase as the backend where businesses and worker data were stored. In addition, we utilized the Sawo-Labs Passwordless OTP Authentication to provide a more secure and seamless experience to our clients since it acts as a method of 2-factor authentication. Furthermore, our platform is web monetized using the proposed W3C standard, enabling us to provide special services like training and career mentoring sessions to the gig workers present as well as partnering up with more business, allowing us to attract more workers without utilizing ads as our main revenue-generating factor for our business model.

Challenges we ran into

We could not add some features like calendar integration for the workers as we could not store the data within firebase and were experiencing issues with the Google Calendar API. In addition, we haven't implemented our dashboard functionality or enabled a way for businesses and workers to have their own workspace due to time constraints.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We worked hard and succeeded in making a proposal and we finished our hack! Got to learn a lot from this wonderful opportunity both in the technical space as well as from a design perspective. Learnt a lot about this posing issue in the gig economy and enjoyed thinking of solutions and building out the platform.

What we learned

We learnt how to make a lightweight frontend application using React as well as how to monetize our website so we generate revenue for every second a coil member spends on our website, allowing us to invest the profits back within the platform. We also enjoyed playing around with various APIs like Uber, Google Calendar and Sawo Labs and learnt how to design a wireframe of the web platform using tools like and Figma.

What's next for GigSearch

We plan to integrate a variety of features for our next steps that include :

  • Operational transparency
  • Global expansion
  • Plan ahead of schedule
  • Order tracking
  • Fare/split estimate to prevent confusions
  • A Calendar that syncs with the platform
