What is your chosen theme and problem statement?
Giving Back Question 1 Volunteering is one of the best ways to give back to our community. What creative ideas do you have to make volunteering easier, widespread, and more beneficial to those in need
What does your hack do?
As such Team Gigglebytes, presents an app which consolidates all voluntary opportunities on one platform. This will allow users to be able to be exposed to more varieties of volunteerism and to venture out of their comfort zone, not limited to their own preferences. Organisers are also able to source for and get in touch with volunteers mainly through one platform, lessening complicated procedures.
How does your hack answer the problem statement?
With the widespread of many voluntary organisation in recent times, especially in Singapore (HCA Hospice Care, Team Nila, etc.), there lacks a common platform for individuals to explore various types of voluntary opportunities simulataneously. Traditionally, volunteers will have to self-source for opportunities by venturing to organisation headquarters, many a times turning people away. By making volunteering opportunities available online, aspiring volunteers will hence be able to sign up in the comfort of their own home.
How did you built your hack?
Collaboration via Figma and insights from the workshops attended
What are some difficulties you overcame?
As our team members consisted of only incoming computer science students and year 1 going on year 2 electrical engineering students, our team fundamentally lacks the computing and designing experience required to build a functional application. Additional, as it was the first time we had participated in a hackathon we are unfamiliar with how to actually build/ develop a solution driven application within a day. Initially, we kick-started off our hackathon journey intending to resolve the problem statement with a webpage solution to spread awareness and encouragement on giving back. However, despite the effectiveness of the workshops, we ultimately encountered tremendous obstacles such as bugs and our webpage ultimately not working, lacking the technical skills to troubleshoot within a short timeframe. However, despite being aware of the circumstances, we remained determined to create a solution to resolve our problem statement. Hence, we relied on our creative abilities using Figma to help us convey our ideas through a visual prototype. Even though our ideas (Touching Hearts) are not realised through a current usable application, we hope and aspire to create it in the future when we are all well-equipped and make it a reality.
What was your biggest learning point from LifeHack 2022?
Through Lifehack 2022, we were exposed to a diverse mulit-faceted computing world through the workshops, where there are many languages and solutions available just to bring an idea to life. Take for instance, sitting through the web development workshop where we were equipped with the fundamentals of CSS which assisted us in creating our application, bringing forth our ideas from fantasy to reality. Ultimately, when we first embarked on this learning journey, we were hesistant on our capabilities as matriculating computer science and engineering students in being able to develop a prototype. However, going through everything, we understand that it is the spirit of creating solutions to resolve problems that is what matters in lifehack. To create a better world for us all by touching everyone's heart in the process
