Portable

Financial clarity for gig workers.

Inspiration

70 million Americans work in the gig economy. Most have no idea how much they're actually making.

A friend drives for Uber, delivers for DoorDash, and freelances on Upwork. When tax season came, they spent a weekend reconstructing income from bank statements and guessed at their quarterly taxes. Result? $2,400 underpayment penalty.

This isn't niche—it's 40% of the American workforce. Yet every financial platform treats gig workers as an afterthought. QuickBooks is built for traditional businesses. Mint doesn't understand gig work. TurboTax only helps once a year.

We built what should already exist: A financial platform designed from scratch for how gig workers actually work.

What it does

Portable is the first financial platform designed specifically for gig workers.

Upload your bank statement once. Portable does everything else.

📊 Automatic Income Detection

  • Recognizes deposits from 50+ platforms (Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Upwork, YouTube, Patreon, etc.)
  • Breaks down earnings by platform, week, and month
  • Shows trends and most profitable income streams

💰 Smart Expense Categorization

  • Auto-identifies business expenses with IRS-approved deduction rates
  • Gas: 100% deductible for drivers. Phone: 80% for gig workers. Subscriptions: 100% for creators.
  • Average gig worker misses $3-5K in deductions yearly. We find them automatically.

📝 Real-Time Tax Calculations

  • Exact quarterly tax liability: self-employment tax (15.3%), federal, state
  • Shows deadlines and how much to set aside
  • No more surprise tax bills or underpayment penalties

📈 Income Stability Score

  • Proprietary algorithm measuring earnings consistency
  • Matters for apartments, loans, credit cards
  • Translates variable income into a score lenders understand

🎓 Hyper-Personalized Content

  • Guides tailored to your platforms and location
  • Not generic advice—built for your reality

How we built it

Tech Stack:

  • Next.js 15 + TypeScript + Supabase + Tailwind CSS v4
  • Shadcn UI for components, Recharts for visualization
  • Deployed on Vercel

Key Architecture:

  1. Income Parser - Pattern matching across 50+ platforms with merchant name variations
  2. Expense Categorizer - Multi-stage classification with IRS deduction rates
  3. Tax Calculator - Implements actual IRS formulas for self-employment tax and quarterly estimates
  4. Stability Scorer - Coefficient of variation + trend analysis + platform diversification
  5. Database - PostgreSQL with row-level security, real-time subscriptions

Process: Built parsing logic first → Dashboard UI with real data → Auth & user management → Responsive design → Demo dataset → Deployed with CI/CD

Challenges we ran into

Transaction Parsing Ambiguity Banks use inconsistent formats. Merchant names vary wildly. Solution: Multi-stage classification with pattern matching, amount heuristics, and user override capabilities.

Tax Calculation Accuracy Tax law is complex. Getting it wrong costs users money. Solution: Deep IRS research, actual formulas (not approximations), CPA validation planned.

Performance with Large Datasets 3,000+ transactions froze the dashboard. Solution: Database indexes, server-side aggregation, pagination, React.memo(). Now loads <2s with 5,000+ transactions.

Income Stability Scoring How to make variable income credible? Solution: Combined statistical consistency, trend direction, platform diversification into 0-100 score validated against real data.

User Trust Uploading bank statements requires trust. Solution: Row-level security, no password storage, client-side CSV processing, clear privacy policy.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

🎯 Solving a real problem for 70 million people Production-ready software that helps gig workers save thousands in taxes and reduce financial stress.

💪 Built a complex financial platform from scratch Full-stack app with auth, real-time updates, 50+ platform detection, IRS-compliant tax calcs, proprietary scoring—all in record time.

🔥 It actually works Upload CSV → instant income breakdown, expense categorization, tax estimates, stability score. Real-time updates, smooth UI, accurate calculations.

🎨 Professional fintech design Dark mode, gradients, glassmorphism. Inspired by Revolut/Mercury but built for gig workers.

🚀 Ready to launch Live demo deployed. Users can sign up today. Clean codebase. Clear roadmap. This is a real company foundation.

What we learned

Technical:

  • Next.js App Router is powerful but complex—server/client component patterns took iteration
  • Supabase RLS is essential for security but requires careful schema planning
  • TypeScript is non-negotiable for financial calculations
  • CSV parsing has infinite edge cases
  • Real-time calculations need database-level optimization

Product:

  • Gig workers are desperate for this—every tester had tax horror stories
  • Financial UI is a balance: too much data overwhelms, too little isn't useful
  • Transparency builds trust—explain why/how calculations work
  • Personalization matters—drivers, creators, freelancers have different needs

Business:

  • Massive market: 70M workers, $1.3T economy, no dominant player
  • Clear monetization: freemium + partnerships + tax filing upsells
  • Impact-driven feels better than pure profit-driven
