Inspiration

We had a difficult time trying to think of ideas for our project. We tried brainstorming small problems in everyday life that could easily be solved with AI. We wanted to create something fairly simple and beginner-friendly, but also something we had never seen before.

What it does

Our program takes in user input to generate a curated gift idea. We ask for the person's relation, age, and 3 or more of their hobbies, as well as the occasion/holiday and a price range. It will then generate an idea for a gift and links to a specific product.

How we built it

We used OpenAi's Quickstart Tutorial to format our website and code. We converted the Name My Pet generator into our idea, and modified the code to include a Google Search API.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered some trouble while trying to output the links to the Google Searches. We also wanted to include a functional price range, but it started to conflict with our code when we implemented the links, and we ran out of time to fix it. The price range is still on the website, but it does not work as well as intended. We also wanted to add a button to generate additional gift ideas, but we ran out of time to implement that as well.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that our AI-generated gift ideas seemed to match fairly well with the given input. No one in our team had much experience with CSS or HTML, but we were able to implement both to create our program.

What we learned

We learned about backend API, something that none of us had experience in. We also learned about training AI, although we were not able to spend much time on it. Overall, we learned that each of us could use our individual skills to create something great as a team in such little time.

What's next for GiftWhiz

In the future, we would like to add the features that we ran out of time for, such as a more functional price range, trained AI, and a "generate next idea" button.
