Inspiration
One of our teammates remembered watching a tik tok video where a person said it would be nice if rich people could buy other people the gifts they wanted. We also wanted to create something revolving around the tradition of gifting, which brings joy to both the giver and receiver. Furthermore, we also wanted to incorporate sustainability, reducing waste by promoting reusing items, giving them a second life. We drew inspiration from this to create our app, as people with resources in good condition that they are not using can give them away to others who need it more.
What it does
This app provides a platform for individuals in need to share a wish list of items they require. Other users can browse through the posts and generously donate items they no longer need to those who can benefit from them. It fosters a community of giving and support by connecting people with resources to those who need them the most. Users can filter through the different categories of items, and chat with users that they are gifting to. Users in need can make posts with a picture and description of the item they would appreciate and add these posts to their wish list, which others can view through their profile.
How we built it
We used Figma to design a prototype of the app. We referenced the interfaces of some apps we use daily, and connected the different features to make it interactive, showing how the app will work. Firstly, we came up with a colour scheme (pink and gold) and designed a logo for the app. Secondly, we brainstormed the frames that we would need and assigned different group members to work on different frames. Along the way we created more frames to show the app's functions better. Thirdly, we connected the different buttons to make the app interactive, showing the flow of the app. Once we were done with these we touched up the app, aligning the different elements and making it look aesthetic.
Challenges we ran into
- Some of the pictures we had in the frames did not show up when we tried the interactive simulation function
- Ensuring we had all the pages we need to show how the app works as intended
- Ensuring the interactions for all the buttons and elements are consistent across different pages (e.g. they are all activated by tapping on the buttons only)
- Being unable to code the app due to limited time and knowledge
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Managing to complete the app's figma without any errors and record our presentation within the limited amount of time.
What we learned
We learnt different features in figma such as making the homepage scrollable, animating the search button and connecting the different elements together. Additionally, we learnt how to design an app, from the ideation process to taking into consideration the user experience and aesthetics, deciding where to place different features such as the settings button.
What's next for Gift of Giving
- Make a web version of the app
- Add a delivery function
- Get sponsors
- Allow users to customise their app interface (e.g. change wallpaper/theme)
- Add disability friendly features
