What did I contribute to
I contributed to the MindsDB project.
What is MindsDB
MindsDB is an open-source machine learning platform that makes it easy for developers to build, train, and deploy machine learning models using SQL queries.
It's AI Virtual Database empowers developers to connect any AI/ML model to any datasource, which includes relational and non-relational databases, data warehouses and SaaS applications.
What did I contribute to it
I extended the existing HackerNews integration in MindsDB to include data from the GET /showstories.json endpoint. Here are the details of my contributions:
Implemented GET /showstories.json Endpoint: I added the functionality to fetch data from the Hacker News GET /showstories.json endpoint (show-hn-stories).
Created a New Table: I created a new table named "showstories" to store the data obtained from the GET /showstories.json endpoint.
Updated Readme: I added a sample query to the Hacker News handler readme to demonstrate how to use the new functionality.
Challenges I ran into
I was new to docker, it took me quite a while to understand what is was for. There was implementations for other endpoints in that integration, so I had to maintain the same structure.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
There was a lot of repeated code, I tried to remove all the redundant code and make the code more modularized, structed and reusable. After a while I got rid of nearly 200 lines of such repeated code.
What I learned
I learnt what is docker why is it used, how to deploy a container with it. How to use MindsDB to link to a datasource and get analysis from it.
