Inspiration
As students and creators, we often struggle with consistency and staying focused, especially in today’s distraction-heavy world. I wanted to create an app that doesn't just passively track time — but actively holds you accountable. The idea behind Ghoul Timer was to gamify discipline. What if losing focus had a real cost? What if the user felt just enough "fear" of losing progress to stay consistent? And so, Ghoul Timer was born — a hauntingly effective productivity app.
What it does
Ghoul Timer helps users build long-term focus habits using a streak-based system:
Each day you complete a set focus duration (e.g., 5–6 hours), you earn collectible "stickers".
Miss a day? One sticker gets locked.
Break your streak for 21 days? All stickers reset.
Three Timer Modes: → Regular Focus Mode (total time tracker) → Pomodoro Mode →Sticker Mode (for high-stakes focus)
The design encourages positive pressure — making it fun for serious users and tough for procrastinators.
How we built it
I first designed the entire UI/UX in Figma, making sure the interface was minimal, clean, and goal-oriented. Then, I used Bolt (create.xyz) to auto-generate the frontend code writing prompt based on the UI I created earlier in Figma.I deployed the project via Netlify, which provided a fast, no-code path to production. This combination of visual design + no-code tools allowed me to bring the MVP to life quickly.
Challenges we ran into
Ensuring the sticker logic felt fair — how many stickers to give, when to lock, and how to make it challenging but motivating.
Managing the layout responsiveness while using an AI-based code generator like Bolt.
Designing a UI that communicates pressure without overwhelming the user — finding that psychological balance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Completed a fully functional MVP with three timer modes and a working streak logic.
Designed a unique motivational mechanism not often seen in productivity apps — based on losing rewards, not just gaining them.
First time using tools like Bolt and Netlify in a real project, and successfully built & deployed the entire thing solo.
What we learned
How gamification, when done right, can enhance discipline and motivation.
The importance of UX decisions in influencing user behavior.
How to turn abstract productivity goals into tangible visual rewards and consequences.
