Inspiration

Imagine your Apple Wallet but you have a ghost inside who wants to get out. Whoa!!! That's so cool!!! I've never seen a game in my wallet before. Inspired by Blackbox (iOS game) and the Cal Hack apple wallet pass.

What it does

Ghostphone is a puzzle game in your Apple Wallet. There's no accompanying app, it's all just wallet passes and tickets and 2 suspicious eyes. You have to solve puzzles using wallet behavior such as deleting passes, refreshing them, reordering to find secret information, looking for expired passes, etc etc etc.

How we built it

Thank you Claude my goat. Figma for design and planning. Clip Studio Paint for drawing assets. Convex for the backend (I didn't run into any problems at all, it was so smooth-sailing!) Cloudflare workers + email routing. Thank you also to GoDaddy for the ghostphone.vip it's such a cool domain!

Challenges we ran into

So so so many hours were spent looking at Pass documentation on the Apple Developer site because so much of the behavior is undocumented, and finding a lot of workarounds... hiding the qr code by setting it to null! Bypassing the mandatory signed NFC requirement by manually editing the pass information! Such are the joys of making a game on something that wasn't built for a game.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Solo project 🤩 Ghostphone is more of a proof-of-concept of the possibilities of Apple Wallet. Honestly there are so many more cool games and stuff you can do with it, this is barely scratching the surface! Almost all the interactions are completely within the Wallet itself and maybe can even teach the player more about the features that exist.

What we learned

Persevere. Documentation is so difficult to read. I love open source tools that help me understand how to use something. I should have brought a blanket. This was so much fun.

What's next for Ghostphone

So many future possibilities — NFC intergration for real-world contact (unfortunately it needed just too much signing credentials), online multiplayer (thanks Convex!), more chapters, support for different phones/versions/models (currently only iOS 27), integration in Orders page... so fun to just explore possiblities.
