Inspiration πŸŽƒ

In the spirit of Kiroween 2026β€”where developers "build something wicked and git commit to the darkness"β€”we wanted to tackle a haunting reality modern developers face: codebase bloat, hidden security specters, and tedious manual operational maintenance.

We asked ourselves: What if developers had a lean, extensible Skeleton Crew of autonomous AI agents watching their backs around the clock? That led to GhostOpsβ€”an ultra-lean multi-agent foundation built on top of Kiro's next-generation specs, hooks, and steering architecture.

What It Does πŸ‘»

GhostOps is an ultra-lean autonomous skeleton template that powers two distinct, practical applications from a single unified core:

  1. GhostAudit (App 1: Automated Code & Security Exorcist):
    • Continuously scans codebases for security vulnerabilities, secret leaks, and memory bottlenecks.
    • Automatically generates Kiro-formatted specs and pull requests to patch vulnerabilities before bugs haunt production.
  2. HauntBot (App 2: Autonomous DevOps & Self-Healing Sentry):
    • Monitors containerized microservices and API gateways.
    • Diagnoses runtime failures, analyzes logs, and executes automated remediation tasks via Kiro hooks and MCP integrations.

How We Built It πŸ› οΈ

GhostOps was engineered from the ground up using Kiro IDE, Kiro CLI, and Kiro Crew:

  • Kiro Specs (/.kiro/specs): We defined declarative task specifications that provide unambiguous schemas for agent planning and task execution.
  • Kiro Hooks (/.kiro/hooks): Automated pre-commit and post-deployment triggers that spawn ghost agent tasks whenever specific code or telemetry thresholds are met.
  • Kiro Steering (/.kiro/steering): System-level steering rules that guide agent behaviors, enforce strict coding and security standards, and eliminate LLM hallucinations.
  • Kiro Crew: Multi-agent coordination where a Leader Ghost assigns and verifies tasks between specialized Auditor and Remediation agents.
  • MCP Integration: Model Context Protocol servers to bridge external database metrics, Docker runtime inspection, and GitHub PR workflows.

Challenges We Ran Into πŸ¦‡

  • Agent Coordination: Ensuring multiple autonomous agents in Kiro Crew don't step on each other's toes when modifying shared code repositories. Kiro's declarative specs and steering files were instrumental in defining clear boundaries.
  • Zero-False-Positive Auditing: Crafting robust steering instructions so GhostAudit focuses strictly on critical vulnerabilities rather than nitpicking formatting issues.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of πŸ†

  • Built a truly lean, reusable skeleton architecture that cleanly bifurcates into two production-grade applications with zero redundant boilerplate.
  • Deep, native integration with Kiro's core capabilities: /.kiro specs, hooks, steering, and Kiro Crew multi-agent orchestration.
  • Clean, intuitive developer experience with instant local setup via Docker and CLI.

What We Learned πŸ’‘

Working with Kiro's specs and steering mechanism completely revolutionized how we think about agentic software engineering. By moving instructions into structured .kiro configuration files, agents become deterministic, reliable engineering partners rather than unpredictable chatbots.

What's Next for GhostOps πŸš€

  • Expanding the Kiro Crew with dedicated Performance and Cost Optimization agents.
  • Community template sharing: allowing developers to publish custom Kiro hooks and specs directly into the GhostOps ecosystem.
