The project started with a will to use open data in a new way. The national land survey of Finland offers terrain scans of the whole land area of Finland. This combined with building and map data from OpenStreetMaps makes for a lot of open data to integrate into a virtual scenery.
The feeling in the virtual environment is much like being a giant looking over Heslinki as it would have been in the movie TRON, considering the colors of magenta, turquoise, and electric blue. We had several discussions about the usage of the scenery but simply flying and walking around Helsinki seems to excite us enough for the weekend. Our patching together of the large amounts of data was enough work for the hackathon anyway.
Future ideas include tourist attraction maps, a new deathstar (visuals match the movie), journey palnning, and virtual bike rides.
