Inspiration
Mass surveillance systems are everywhere today; filming us irrespective of our consent. AI watches, records, and learns from our every move. Our faces, our bodies, our gestures—turned into training data without permission.
Here at 404 Apparel, we believe that your data and your privacy is your choice. In a world that tracks everything, we choose to disappear on purpose. We wanted to make a statement, and an impact: not a fashion statement, but one that stands for digital autonomy.
What it does
404 Apparel brings privacy into your own hands. When worn, it visually confuses machine vision models, obscuring identity from unethical data harvesting and surveillance systems.
How we built it
We create our 404 Design patterns to distract and obscure person detection with random pixel generation refined with optimization algorithms that continuously test it against YOLO v8’s AI-powered computer vision system.
From there, we move our designs to t-shirts and print with additional designs to reflect our ideas and values behind data agency.
Finally, we created a web marketing page and dashboard for the user to test their 404 Design, design their own shirt, and purchase it; creating an interactive demo.
Challenges we ran into
Creating the right pattern to obscure the YOLO computer vision model was an exhaustive and difficult process. We ran countless iterations and tests to test how pixel spacing and subtle color shifts affect AI recognition outcomes.
Additionally, finding a shop to print our t-shirts on-demand in less than 24 hours on a weekend proved to be both a logistical and financial challenge. After multiple phone calls around the greater Austin area and a significantly lighter wallet, we were able to make it happen.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a working, feasible project based on our understanding of computer vision and how they view/”see” images. Not only that, but we did it for something we truly believe in; agency over one’s own data. This reflects a level of creativity we’re proud to show off.
What we learned
We dove deep into computer vision, object/human detection, and creative design.
404 Apparel pushed us far outside the boundaries of a typical software/hardware Hackathon; bringing tech principles into places otheri.
What's next for 404 Apparel
We plan to refine our technology, expand to create cooler designs, and collaborate with digital-rights organizations to expand 404 Apparel into a broader awareness campaign on data privacy and consent.
We want 404 Apparel to evolve from a hackathon project into a global movement: a wearable reminder that what’s yours—your face, your data, your story—should always remain yours.
