Inspiration
In the last few decades, we start to notice that human's daily activity has a huge impact on the global warming issue. And food-consuming is also a big part of the CO2 emission. If we are aware of how much GHG(greenhouse gas) we produce every time we consume food, we would have better control over how we are going to consume.
What it does
The calculator tells how much GHG a dish produce by entering the dish's name.
How we built it
There are three main questions we need to answer:
- what ingredients does a dish contain?
- how much GHG does an ingredient produce?
- How would calculate the total GHG?
Challenges we ran into
- Poor data It is difficult to find a proper database both for unit convertor and GHG for ingredients 2.Match precisely It is hard to identify the name of the ingredient in the database precisely
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Able to utilize the API and web scraping tool to acquire data.
What we learned
Has a new understanding of carbon footprint that actually everyone has the ability to make a change to our environment.
What's next for the GHG calculator
- Add more features
- Include a selection of ingredients and the amount, etc
- continuing updating database
- keep updating database from external resources such as IPCC and academic publications
- improve calculator algorithm
- Take processing into accounts such as electricity and gas when preparing food.
- make it more interactive using a web developing tool
