Inspiration

Maharashtra has incredible adventure destinations, from Sahyadri treks and Konkan water sports to camping near forts and lakes. But discovering reliable local operators, checking availability, comparing experiences, and booking safely is still fragmented across WhatsApp groups, Instagram pages, and word of mouth.

Ghatwise was inspired by the need for a trusted, organized platform that helps travelers book authentic outdoor experiences while giving local operators a professional way to reach more customers.

What it does

Ghatwise is a two-sided adventure tourism booking marketplace for Maharashtra.

Travelers can explore curated experiences like Kalsubai treks, Rajmachi camping, Kolad rafting, Tarkarli scuba diving, and Bhandardara getaways. They can filter listings by category, region, difficulty, duration, price, and rating, view detailed itineraries, check availability, select headcount and add-ons, and complete a booking through test-mode online payment.

Operators can onboard onto the platform, create and manage listings, set available slots, view incoming bookings, and track their trips. The goal is to make adventure travel easier, safer, and more transparent for both sides.

How we built it

We built Ghatwise as a full-stack web application focused on a working end-to-end booking flow.

The platform uses a modern web stack with a responsive frontend, backend APIs, structured database models, seeded Maharashtra-specific listings, and role-based flows for travelers and operators. We designed the UI around an adventure-brand identity using earthy colors inspired by the Sahyadris, monsoon landscapes, and local travel culture.

The core data model includes users, operators, listings, itineraries, availability slots, bookings, payments, and reviews. We prioritized the traveler journey first: discovery, listing details, booking, checkout, confirmation, and dashboard. Then we added operator-side functionality so new experiences can be listed and managed.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was keeping the scope realistic for a hackathon. A tourism marketplace can quickly become very large, with authentication, payments, operator verification, dashboards, reviews, availability calendars, admin moderation, and media uploads. We had to prioritize the features that best demonstrated the product idea.

Another challenge was designing the booking flow in a way that felt realistic without overcomplicating it. We needed availability, headcount, add-ons, payment status, and booking confirmation to work together cleanly.

We also spent time making the platform feel specific to Maharashtra instead of looking like a generic travel website. Using real destinations, local categories, and adventure-focused design helped make the demo more authentic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that Ghatwise demonstrates a complete marketplace concept instead of just a static landing page. Users can move through a real travel flow: discover an experience, view details, choose a date and slots, book, pay, and see the result in their dashboard.

We are also proud of the local focus. The platform highlights real Maharashtra adventure destinations and gives visibility to local operators who are often discovered only through informal channels.

Another accomplishment is the product design. We tried to create a brand that feels outdoorsy, energetic, and rooted in the Sahyadri and Konkan travel experience rather than copying a generic hotel or flight-booking interface.

What we learned

We learned how important it is to reduce scope while still preserving the core product experience. For a marketplace, the most important thing is not the number of features, but whether both sides of the marketplace can clearly understand the value.

We also learned that designing for trust is crucial in travel and adventure tourism. Details like operator verification, reviews, cancellation policies, availability, and clear itineraries make a big difference in whether someone would feel comfortable booking.

Finally, we learned how much local context improves a product. Using real places, realistic pricing, and region-specific categories made Ghatwise feel more useful and believable.

What's next for Ghatwise

Next, we want to add stronger operator verification, admin approval workflows, real media uploads, and production payment handling. We also want to improve discovery with map-based browsing, personalized recommendations, weather-aware trip suggestions, and group booking features.

Longer term, Ghatwise could expand into a full adventure tourism network for Maharashtra, helping travelers find safe and memorable experiences while helping verified local operators grow their business online.
