Inspiration

Especially relevant in the current American political cycle, we wanted to build a website that would help users be more aware of the bias of the information they are receiving, as well as help them see information from multiple sources

What it does

The site gets news articles from many different media sources, and arranges them based on the sources average bias levels and reliability

How I built it

Using python for the back end to get the data for the articles, react/JS for the front end.

Challenges I ran into

Time management and restrictions with implementing more complicated ideas

What I learned

Time management, working with a team, effective web scraping.

What's next for GetTheFacts

Develop the site further, adding color coding to indicate the bias level of the site. The original plan for the site was to have a list of articles, then clicking on each article would reveal a list of sources for that same story. For example, one box would be about Trump's COVID diagnosis, and clicking on that box to expand it would reveal links to the relevant piece by CNN, Fox, NBC, AP, etc, making it clear where on the political spectrum where those sites tend to swing. This is still the implementation we'd like to see in the future, but couldn't be completed in the time we had.
