With every app fighting for your attention, I just want some ‘quiet time’—a simple, automatic way to mute all notifications for, say, an hour (customizable), then let the chaos return!

Inspiration

The inspiration came after we would get constantly inundated with notifications from various apps like Instragram, TikTok,Facebook, WhatsApp, SnapChat, Text messages. As soon as the notification comes I would start looking into the notification content ( almost 99.9% junk ) and would context switch from my current work to something non-sense. I was inspired when I heard about the term Mindfulness work. Work less hours but fully engrossed.

What it does

Out application allows users to pick a customizable time in which Application switches off all notifications for the customizable time. After that time the Notifications would be turned on automatically.

How we built it

We brainstormed about the idea and then divided the work and start working on it.

  • Brainstromed about how to implement in limited time. Studied whether it would be easy to implement on Android or ios. Since we have an Android phone we picked Android Studio.
  • Came up with the simple UX to pick a time in Minutes with a count down timer.
  • Coded and tested it on the Phone Emulator.
  • Side loaded the phone App on our phone for testing.

Challenges we ran into

  • Android Phone permission gave us lot of issues. -Running on the emulator was easy but running on the actual device provided challenges as the API level which we picked in Android Studio API level vs what we had in our actual phone were not compatible. Resolved this issue by searching in the web.
  • Initial UX which we picked was not fitting on our phone or was not looking good. Made the changes to fit in almost all the phones and formfactors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Learned how to program in Android and learned a lot of programming for the device.
  • This is great as this is our first Hackathon where we participated and it was full of fun.

What we learned

  • Android programming.

- with the resources in the web. Its actually easy to come up with the working code from ideation to the real working application.

What's next for GetS**tDone

  • Update the application to provide mechanism to filter the notifications such that its not universal stop of notifications but allow the notifications from certain applications.
  • Create the similar application for iOS
  • Learn about Flutter which allow to write code "once" and which would work for both Android and iOS.
