Inspiration
COVID-19 has transformed millions of peoples lives because of its rapid outbreak. Due to its significant role in all of our lives, we were inspired to make a game revolving around the virus as a theme. In order to put a smile on people's faces, we wanted to shed some light and humor to what has been an extremely difficult time for many people by creating this game.
The year is 2030, just when everyone thought COVID-19 was getting better, it transformed and turned into an airborne virus that posses its host and turns them into a zombie. Most of the world has already been affected but not you. You somehow managed to survive by barricading yourself and have now heard of a haven that has not been effected. Now, it is your goal to drive over there no matter the cost.
As you can see, we played around with this scary COVID situation and exaggerated it by turning it into a zombie apocalypse.
How to Play
First, the user will meet our start screen. Here they can select whether they would like to play with their arrow keys or their mouse. They can also use the space bar to gain a boost. But beware that this boost leads to less control over the car. Furthermore, they can click on the sun to change the time of day, press p to pause and resume and escape to quit. Their objective is to get to level 10 while avoiding the random virus and zombie obstacles that will popup. If they get to level 10, they win as they have successfully gotten out!
How we built it
In order to build this game, we used processing java, as well as Piskel in order to design the sprites, and Gimp to make the background design, and user interface.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many challenges making such an advanced game in such a short amount of time. To begin, making the road lines in the middle was difficult because we weren't sure how to animate them. Secondly, designing and creating the car was also a difficult task, and took a lot of time. Without a doubt, creating the boost button was the hardest part because we didn't know how to speed up everything, especially in correlation with the other animations. Lastly, a great challenge was creating the hit detection between the car and the obstacles from scratch since none of us had experience with how to do that.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Whether we win or lose this competition, we will surely be proud of ourselves for building such an extremely good-looking and interactive game from scratch. The feature of our project that we are most proud of is how beautiful and functional the game screen is. Having an animated background, working road, movable car and animated obstacles was a huge challenge that we are extremely proud to have overcome. It was all of our first times creating a good-looking game app and we are proud that we could have accomplished it.
What we learned
We learned a lot during this hackathon. Firstly, we learned how the new programming language, processing java. Two of our teammates had never used that before so they had to quickly learn it and start using it in this hackathon. It is a very cool and flexible language that will definitely come in useful in the future. This was also all of our first times developing a game app for a hackathon so we learned a lot about how their architectures work and what goes into making one. Lastly, we learned a lot about how to work together in a team because developing a big project in such a short time teaches you a lot about efficient project management and collaberation.
What's next for GetOut
Next, we hope to clean the game up a little bit by working on creating a more simple and interactive user interface. We will also work on implementing new features such as an online multiplayer option, new zombie obstacles and an instructions screen. After we have done all of that and are satisfied with the final results, we will push it out to the public for everyone to use and have fun with.
