Inspiration
This has been a very hard time for all of us. During the pandemic, many kids that we know are bored and don't know what to do. We created this game to alleviate their boredom.
What it does
Kids can use arrow keys on a computer or a joystick on a phone to get their block to the diamond. They first have to get through a field of cacti. If they touch those they die. After that, they have to get through 3 lasers which move. After those lasers, they go to the diamond and when they touch it they win. However, they also only have 3 lives and when they die, they go back to the beginning. The amount of lives they have is mentioned at the very top right corner. If they want to play again, they just press the r key.
How we built it
We used javascript for our project. With it, we created all our computer characters like the lasers and cacti and the user character which is the block.
Challenges we ran into
We took a long to figure out what topic our project should be on. We had another project idea first about education but since we are beginners the code was too complicated and we didn't know how to make it. Because of that, we created a new idea where we wanted to create a game for kids which fixed the problem of boredom.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to make a game even though we were beginner coders. I have made other small projects but not as big as this game. However, Pujitha, my partner is a first time coder and she learned some basics about coding.
What we learned
Pujitha learned how block coding worked and she learned about variables and functions. I learned how hackathons work as this was my first hackathon.
What's next for Get the Diamond!
Maybe we can add more obstacles and characters for the kids. We could make this game more interactive and for a bigger audience.
