Inspiration
I had heard about the Flutter game engine before, but had never actually implemented it. The biggest challenge was that I was unfamiliar with this field. Fortunately, this competition provided an opportunity that motivated me enough to complete this challenge.
What it does
Playing this game promotes the importance of environmental conservation. Throughout the game, players must not only continuously overcome increasing difficulties but also consider the amount of trash they collect. It's a game where users transform into rabbits to defend their homeland
How we built it
I started with a basic Flutter project, referred to the Flame with Flutter project in Code Labs, and broke down the wall using the examples in the project as a reference. I also looked at the super_dash project on GitHub. The idea of environmental protection is conveyed through a cute rabbit character and a focus on garbage collection. Picking up trash will improve the environment and gradually reduce the difficulty of the game, whereas failing to pick up trash will result in the game's difficulty continuously increasing.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was that none of the team members had experience with Flutter Flame game development. We had to rely on exploring sample code to get a better understanding. Another challenge was deciding on the game's theme. Based on the game super_dash, we came up with the current idea to create a casual top-down game. The team then collaborated to divide and conquer tasks to complete the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
From nothing to something, from disappointment to newfound hope, and from unfamiliarity to familiarity, each team member has undergone significant growth and transformation throughout this process.
What we learned
We not only learned Flutter technology but also discovered the benefits of the Flame framework. Additionally, we learned to break free from conventional thinking, brainstorm ideas, and successfully bring them to fruition.
What's next for this game
Having mastered the Flame game technology with ease, our team has sparked numerous ideas for the future. These include concepts such as a shooting game or a tower defense game, among others.
About environmental sustainability
We have conceived a story with the theme of rabbits defending their homeland, highlighting the challenges facing animal ecosystems. We hope that through the gameplay, players can understand the importance of clearing garbage. Players are encouraged to pick up as much trash as possible during the game. The design includes changing the scene based on the amount of garbage collected, thereby raising human awareness of environmental protection and its significance.
Sustainable gamification
This game can be extended to a variety of harsh environments, creating diverse terrains and increasing difficulty levels. In addition to garbage, carrots can also appear, which when collected, increase health points. Moreover, more items can be introduced to enhance the gaming experience. Future developments could include an online version supporting multiplayer functionality, allowing players to start games together, pick up trash, and survive in these adverse environments. A global leaderboard could motivate users to challenge themselves. Finally, integration with Google Wallet for purchasing items and issuing environmental rewards for collecting trash could be added.
