Inspiration
We often get stuck sitting too long, at our desks, studying, or working, which drains our motivation and focus. “Get a Move On!” was inspired by the idea that short, fun movement breaks can boost productivity, lift your mood, and clear your thoughts. Movement helps reset your energy, making it easier to finish tasks efficiently and creatively.
What it does
Get a Move On! tracks your location and detects when you’ve been staying in one place for too long. When that happens, it starts playing upbeat music to motivate you to move and recharge your energy.
Once you start feeling refreshed, you can simply press the “Stop It!” button to pause the music. The app also provides fun, AI-powered activity suggestions to help you stay active and boost your mood throughout the day.
How we built it
We built Get a Move On! using Visual Studio Code as our main development tool. The front end was created with HTML and CSS for structure and design, while JavaScript powers the app’s interactive features.
Our main JavaScript file contains all core functions, including geolocation tracking, audio playback, and activity suggestions that motivate users to get moving. Our backend includes API calls to Google Gemini to help generate creative prompts and suggestions for movement activities. We host our website with Vercel.
Challenges we ran into
We faced several challenges while building Get a Move On! Especially with Gemini API integration and setting up the geolocation timer to accurately track user movement. Additionally, two of our team members were beginners and new to HTML and CSS, so they had to learn the basics while working on the project. Despite these hurdles, we worked together, shared ideas, and made steady progress through collaboration and persistence
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re most proud that we successfully got the Gemini API working! It was a real challenge at first, but through persistence, we made it function as intended. Along the way, we gained valuable technical skills, improved our problem-solving abilities, and learned how to collaborate more effectively under pressure.
We are also proud of our retro 80’s style!
What we learned
We learned how to correctly set a backend server to keep our API key private and make our calls to the Gemini API. This was the biggest learning curve! Our member with the most web experience only had frontend experience. We also had never used APIs before, so that was exciting to learn.
What's next for Get A Move On!
We would love to display the countdown timer in the future and allow a user to set their own interval.
