Inspiration
We were inspired by the murder-mystery board game "Clue", where a murder has taken and everyone is trying to collect clues to figure out who's the murderer, what was the murder weapon, and where it took place. We started to think about how we can connect digital forensics to "Clue". So, naturally, we designed the application, "Get a Clue", that would be directly used by private investigators to look for any data that could be related to the crime that took place.
What it does
"Get A Clue", helps detectives/PI's safely access important files from devices recovered from the crime scene such as people's phones, or computers by having a built-in malware protection prior. Our application would then, transfer the data and cross-checking with the detective's database to identify any crucial digital footprint information that may be related to the crime or a prior crime.
How we built it
Using Figma, we created the design of how we wanted this app to function. By doing so, we resembled an actual application and have functional features to where we can have our mockup be translated into code. After writing down everything we wanted to have in our app, we set out to start designing each page as a temporary page until we came back to them and worked on them more to resemble what we had in mind.
Challenges
It was initially challenging to decide on what our focus for the app would be due to the wide variety of topics are under the concept of Digital Forensics. Neither one of us had any prior experience or knowledge of Digital Forensics, but we were both interested in learning about it and so we stepped up to the challenge of researching terminology and identify what the necessary components we would need to include in our design.
Accomplishments & What we're proud of
For students who are quite new to Figma and first-time hackathoners, we had issues starting up and picking our project. We wanted something that we were going to be proud of and be happy with whatever our final result would be and the project as a whole. From the brainstorming process to building on Figma were proud moments for us because we could visually see how far we came.
What's next for Get a Clue
We believe "Get A Clue" can be used in real-world crime scenes and help out in detective research. With funding along with UX/UI testing from people who work in Digital Forensics, we will be able to throughly develop a full-stack application with what we have already and the improvements from feedback to make "Get A Clue" well-rounded and ultimately hand it over it to the right company someday.
