Inspiration

We were inspired by the everyday communication challenges faced by speech-impaired individuals. Simple needs, conversations, and emergency situations can become difficult when others cannot understand sign language. We wanted to build a solution that uses technology not just to recognize gestures, but to give people a more independent and confident way to express themselves.

What it does

Gestura is an AI-powered smart communication ecosystem that translates hand gestures into text and speech. It combines a smart glove with a camera-based mobile web application for gesture recognition. The platform also includes an AI assistant, gesture learning features, and an Emergency SOS system that can alert caregivers and share the user's location during critical situations.

How we built it

We designed Gestura by combining wearable technology, AI, computer vision, and accessible web development. The smart glove uses sensors to capture hand movements, while the mobile application uses camera-based gesture recognition. AI processes the detected gestures and converts them into meaningful text and voice output. We also designed an intuitive interface with an AI guide and emergency alert functionality to make the system simple and practical for everyday use.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was designing a system that could recognize gestures accurately in different conditions and make communication fast enough for real-time use. We also had to consider user comfort, accessibility, hardware integration, and the reliability of emergency alerts. Balancing advanced technology with a simple user experience was another important challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have developed a human-centered solution that addresses a meaningful real-world problem. We successfully brought together AI, gesture recognition, wearable technology, and emergency assistance into one ecosystem. Most importantly, Gestura is designed with the user's independence, confidence, dignity, and accessibility at its core.

What we learned

Through Gestura, we learned that successful innovation begins with understanding the user's real needs. We gained practical experience in AI, computer vision, hardware concepts, UI/UX design, and building technology around accessibility. We also learned the importance of continuous testing, teamwork, iteration, and keeping technology simple for the people who use it.

What's next for Gestura

Our next step is to improve gesture recognition accuracy and expand the system to support more gestures, regional languages, and personalized communication. We plan to enhance the AI's ability to learn individual users' gestures, improve offline functionality, and integrate the smart glove more deeply with the mobile application. In the future, we aim to collaborate with accessibility organizations, healthcare institutions, and user communities to test and refine Gestura for real-world adoption.
