Inspiration: As a group of friends, and we've always had a passion for geography and history, knowing more about where and when we are in our universe is a neglected feat nowadays. We realized that schools don't offer great geography programs, so we decided to create Gerry, the Geohistorian Game!
What it does: Gerry the Geohistorian Game, or GGG for short, is separated into two parts, the practice, and the tournament. The practice is on the website, linked below. It has no points, nor competition, but there are more questions and it tells you what you got right and wrong. The tournament is the application of this knowledge. It's a discord bot that you can get on your own discord server, that quizzes you and a group of friends on earth geography, space geography (only in our solar system), and history! The tournament aspect is focused almost entirely on learning by competition, you can have fun, and learn more about the world around you.
How we built it: Our team first separated into two groups, one side would be handling the discord bot, and the other handling the practice website.
Challenges we ran into: As a website team member, I can truthfully say that we struggled. Hard. Prior to joining this competition my group and I had no knowledge of HTML, CSS, or hosting, and designing a website. So learning all of this in a limited time span was truly a challenge. The discord bot team faced similar challenges, little to no knowledge, and limited experience. Despite struggling as much as we did, I think we can all look back on this as a learning experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Building a functional website in less than 24 hours with no prior experience. And building a discord bot, with once again, little to no experience with the discord API.
What we learned: We learned that preparation is key. If we ever participate in something like this again, we'll make sure to truly understand the resources that are at hand.
What's next for Gerry the Geohistorian: As of right now, there are less than 100 questions, which greatly limits the amount of originality before repetition. So our next step would be to add more questions and to make the user experience more enjoyable.
