Inspiration
We were inspired by the idea of creating a program that can change large portions of text into a more readable and enjoyable experience for everyone, and the shared adoration for Geronimo Stilton aided in our direction. Eventually, we wanted our app to be educational as well, leading to our idea of a Teaching Mode to help improve literacy.
What it does
This site will take long pieces of text from a user and reformat it so that specific words are displayed in a more appealing text, just like in the beloved Geronimo Stilton series. But wait, there's more! Users can select a Teaching Mode that provides a variety of grammatic terms that the user can test their knowledge on, fully based on the text they've provided.
How we built it
We used both GitHub and Visual Studio Code to collaborate on this project, and strategically utilized AI tools to help us in our learning of the HTML coding language. After creating the visual format of the website, we incorporated a text box and natural language processor that took each word individually and possibly change it into a new format. Then, we added another drop down option for users to choose a variety of grammatic terms and type their own guesses as to whether a word in their text matches that category.
Challenges we ran into
As first year students, our lack of software training posed a challenge, since it reasonably limited the scope of our abilities while brainstorming. So, to combat this, we researched into the various programs and platforms DeltaHacks provided for us, and took our time in configuring our program as a team.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud of how much we were able to accomplish in the short competition period, and we really enjoyed creating something useful and entertaining.
What we learned
We learned how to navigate many new platforms, including GitHub and Visual Studio Code. Additionally, we learned a lot about HTML coding and how to improve the UI/UX of an app or website.
