Inspiration
I'm just a big geography and history nerd! I love learning random things about countries, memorizing all the names, learning about history and culture, etc. Important cultural and social information like heritage sites, holidays and languages can be tough to obtain without a little research. Hence, I thought it would be better to have a website that retrieves and presents all this information and more. Its a one-stop shop for everything about a country from population to holidays.
What it does
It is an interactive map, users can click on a country and can see all the information pertaining to that country like population, languages, holidays, heritage sites, monuments, etc. All information is relevant and up-to-date. There are also options to filte countries by things like population and area.
How we built it
I used APIs like REST Countries and the UNESCO World Heritage list to obtain the information needed for the site. I used Leaflet to obtain and customize an interactive map. The site is a simple HTML and JavaScript site.
Challenges we ran into
Finding the right APIs was a challenge, gettign the right relevant and up-to-date information was tough.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The site has minimal glitches and a fast response time when it comes to retrieving data. It is uselful and up-to-date.
What we learned
I learned a lot about the use of APIs and I had the privilege of being part of my own target audience, which are either students or just history and geography nerds, so I learnt a lot about different countries.
What's next for GeoStory
I want to add more information about the history of the countries and add an option to change the map according to the year. I want to eventually build my own API with the help of AI tools and experts like historians and teachers that will contain detailed information about the origins and timelines of different nations and empires.
