Inspiration
The inspiration for Geoscape came from wanting to make learning about countries and cultures more engaging and fun. We were inspired by other current popular web games such as Wordle and Geoguesser. The goal was to develop a game that contained a simple and addictive gameplay that would not only challenge players' knowledge, but also inspire them to explore the world and learn more about its diverse regions.
What it does
Apon opening Geoscape, the user will be presented with a world map and a hint about a country which they will need to select. Five hints and guesses will be given and with each incorrect guess the user will receive another hint. This will continue until the user either successfully guesses the country or fails to do so. If the limit of 5 incorrect guesses is reached, the user will be shown the correct country. If the user answers correctly, they will be congratulated and asked to continue. This ends up haveing an addictive and fun feel to it, while still being slightly educational.
How we built it
Geoscape was built with a mixture of CSS, Python, Django, and React.
Challenges we ran into
While developing the frontend, hosting our website, and with our backend code we ran into some challenges. For the frontend, getting the world map of Geoscape to display exactly as we wanted was difficult as we had no experience dealing with SVGs. Hosting a website that runs a backend code was an area that many of our team members had no experience doing. Designing an engaging user experience that maintains a balance between being educational and entertainmening was a delicate task.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Our website UI and game display provide a very friendly interface for users.
- The openai API works great for capturing data for the country facts
- Implementing a zoom feature when the correct continent
What we learned
- Connecting our frontend with our backend in order to recive prompts from openai
- Stylized frontend coding dealing with CSS
- Our two EE's learned how to deal with backend coding and using Django to pull data from Chat GPT and launch a website.
What's next for Geoscape
A big upgrade for geoscape would be to optimize the website to provide an enhanced mobile experience.
