Inspiration
We realized that most reminders fail not because we forget what to do, but because we forget when it actually matters. A to-do list can’t tell when you’re standing in front of Costco, the pharmacy, or your favorite coffee shop. GeoRemind was inspired by the idea that location is one of the strongest memory triggers humans have—so why shouldn’t reminders work the same way?
What it does
GeoRemind lets you attach reminders to real-world places. When you walk near a location—like Costco—it automatically nudges you with exactly what you meant to remember, like “buy cake.” No alarms, no checking lists, just context-aware reminders that show up at the perfect moment.
How we built it
We built GeoRemind using location-based geofencing to detect when a user enters a defined area. The app runs quietly in the background and triggers reminders only when relevant. We focused on a lightweight, privacy-conscious architecture and a simple UX that makes setting a reminder as fast as thinking of it.
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing location accuracy with battery efficiency
- Handling background location permissions across platforms
- Avoiding notification overload while still being useful
- Designing a UX that makes geofenced reminders feel intuitive, not technical
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a reminder system that feels almost magical when it works
- Reducing reminder noise by tying alerts to context instead of time
- Building something people immediately “get” without explanation
- Turning a common frustration into a seamless experience
What we learned
We learned that context beats complexity. Users don’t want more features—they want fewer interruptions and smarter timing. We also learned how critical trust is when dealing with location data, and how much value comes from making an app feel invisible until it’s needed.
What's next for GeoRemind
Next, we want to expand beyond simple location triggers—supporting recurring places, smarter suggestions, and integrations with calendars, lists, and voice input. Long-term, GeoRemind aims to become a personal, ambient memory layer for everyday life—helping you remember effortlessly, wherever you are.
