GeoQuest - The Hazard Chronicles - Mapping Flames, Saving Futures
What Inspired Us
The alarming increase in the frequency and severity of wildfires due to climate change, deforestation, and human negligence motivated us to develop an impactful and interactive solution. We wanted to use data and technology not just to analyze the situation but also to visually communicate the scale of the issue and encourage proactive responses.
What We Learned
- The power of spatial analysis in environmental monitoring.
- How to integrate real-time wildfire data using external APIs and ArcGIS Online.
- The process of converting raw geospatial data into interactive story maps.
- Leveraging Python and ArcGIS tools for publishing, authentication, and visualization.
How We Built It
Data Preparation
We used the shapefiles (.shp, .dbf, .prj, etc.) from the [1950–2022 Tornado Paths Dataset] to understand the structure of spatial datasets.
Scripting with Python
Using Jupyter Notebook (ArcGIS.ipynb), we:
- Imported essential libraries (pandas, arcgis, etc.)
- Connected to ArcGIS Online using the GIS() module.
- Preprocessed wildfire datasets (cleaning, formatting geo-coordinates, handling missing data).
- Converted data to spatial format and published it as a Feature Layer.
Creating the Story Map
With ArcGIS Online, we designed an interactive Story Map showing:
- High-risk wildfire zones.
- Real-time satellite overlays (e.g., NOAA, MODIS).
- Explanatory pop-ups, data layers, and preventive tips.
Visualization
The final product was an interactive Story Map, helping users explore wildfire data spatially and temporally.
Challenges We Faced
Accessing Premium Features
Limited access to some ArcGIS functionalities required us to rely on institutional support.
Data Standardization
Aligning geographic and time-based data across multiple sources.
Real-time Feed Integration
Ensuring proper formatting and scheduling for live updates from NOAA and MODIS sources.
Learning Curve
Understanding the ArcGIS Python API and feature publishing was initially overwhelming.
Final Output & Insights
Our Story Map presents a comprehensive, live, and layered view of wildfire activity. By analyzing past wildfire trends and integrating current data, we created a tool that:
- Enhances public awareness.
- Supports decision-making for emergency preparedness.
- Demonstrates how geospatial storytelling can turn data into actionable insights.
