Inspiration
r/place is a magic space with deep lore and history. We found it fascinating to roam around and discover new art and the stories hidden within the pixels of the r/place. We wanted to create a love letter to r/place by blending together ideas from games like GeoGuessr, and test players' knowledge of the r/place.
What it does
The game selects a random spot on the r/place image each day and players must guess which section of they are being shown. The closer they get, the better their score!
How we built it
The frontend for posts uses HTML and React for rendering the daily subsection of r/place and map to zoom in and pan around, as well as the leaderboard for a given post. The backend handles initializing data for a post, requests for new guesses, and persistence to Redis for users' post data and the scoring leaderboard.
Challenges we ran into
Figuring out how best to debug and troubleshoot server issues. How to communicate a call to action to the player through the lens of a reddit post. How to create more dynamic visual interest within the lens of a reddit post.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learned how to work within the Devvit ecosystem and created a working game in 2 days! (Submitted with 1 minute to spare because we found out about the hackathon late!)
What we learned
We learned how to quickly assess a reasonable scope of work in a very limited timeframe using (should / could / need) tagging to rapidly identify core features.
What's next for GeoPlace/r
More polish and branding on the front end, potentially with dynamic splash screens for each day's post.
