GroSpace is a program that facilitates the process of installing a vertical garden in any space. The user provides the dimensions of their space and GroSpace most efficiently calculates how many planting modules fit in!

Vertical Farming is an indoor farming technique that utilizes stacked vertical shelving units and aeroponics (nutrients delivered to plants via mist), to maximize yield. Plants are efficiently grown without dirt on recycled cloth where the leaves are separated from the roots which dangle below in the mist. This technique allows for maximum nutrient absorption and oxygenation. Efficient LEDs that only provide color spectrums needed for the plants to grow are used to save energy. Temperature and humidity inside facilities is regulated and adapts to plant growth data. Because of this, crops can be grown year round, unrestricted by seasonal weather.

70% of freshwater usage and contamination is from agriculture. 1/3rd of arable land on Earth has been degraded in the last 40 years. Vertical farming requires less water and land. Land grown crops need to be transported, which forces early picking and degrades the quality of the crop. Transport also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. No pesticides or herbicides are required By 2050, world population will be 10 million, increasing the demand for food, while decreasing amount available to farm with the expansion of cities. Vertical farms can be built in repurposed buildings, such as former steel mills and packaging facilities instead of being torn down.

A Quote from a CNBC Article: “In light of the current Covid-19 pandemic, there is a clear need to understand how we shorten supply chains and improve national resilience in our food supply.”

Localizing food production decreases the strain on the food supply chain, which is better for the environment and guarantees the availability on food. These gardens also give communities the opportunity to interact with the food growing process, making them appreciate their food more and reconnect with nature.
