Inspiration
As weird as it sounds, I saw pictures of a cave painting recently and it reminded me how cool it is that many of the areas we live in have a deep history. UVA is a great example because some of the grounds we walk on were shared by not only countless historically know people, but also so many cool people who's stories we dont get to hear! Thats what inspired me to make GeoHoo.
What it does
It lets you see a map of your area, and track down posts by physically walking to where they were taken! You're also free to make your own mark on an areas history by making posts!
How we built it
GeoHoo was build with HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, and a MySQL database. It is hosted on bluehost.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges was learning how to use openlayers, as I had very little experience with it. I think the result was super cool though, and I definitely learned a lot!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As mentioned the mapping stuff was really cool to see come to life! I'm also proud that I got GeoHoo functioning by the deadline as setting up a database, middle layer, and frontend all take a while.
What we learned
The mapping software OpenLayers was a big one, but I also learned a lot about to geolocation api in modern browsers. It was decent on laptops but phones are incredibly accurate, which is no surprise, but I learned how to use it!
What's next for GeoHoo
I'd like to add features like likes, comments, post management, and a report feature for when someone inevitably logs some less than tasteful moments.
