Inspiration

The inspiration for the Enviromaps project arose from a recognition of the pressing need to raise awareness about sustainable practices and environmental challenges. The increasing relevance of geospatial mapping in understanding and addressing these issues became a focal point. The aim was to create a collection of maps that not only captivates users with data but also educates them about some elements of sustainability in a visually immersive and interactive way. The project's inspiration stems from a desire to contribute to a greener and more environmentally conscious world by leveraging the power of 3D data and immersive technology.

What it does

Enviromaps is a web-based 3D collection of maps designed to educate and raise awareness about sustainability through an interactive and visually immersive experience. Here's what the project does:

Interactive Mapping: Utilizing the Cesium mapping technology, Enviromaps provides users with interactive map interfaces. Users can navigate immersive and explore different regions and landmarks.

3D data visualization: The integration of Google 3D tiles enhances the visual representation of sustainability-related data. Users can explore three-dimensional models and visualizations that highlight various aspects of sustainable practices and environmental challenges.

VR data visualizations : Uses Aframe charts and visualizations to display data from trusted API sources. Data that can be viewed beyond 2d screens but also in 3D VR and AR.

Sustainability Information: Enviromaps incorporates useful sustainability data, providing users with reliable and relevant information about our earth enviroment.

Awareness Building: The overarching goal of the project is to raise awareness about sustainability issues. By combining gaming elements with environmental education, Enviromaps seeks to reach a broader audience and inspire individuals to make more informed and sustainable choices in their lives.

User Engagement: The project encourages user engagement by allowing players to actively participate in the exploration of a greener virtual world. It fosters a sense of responsibility and connection to environmental issues.

In summary, Enviromaps is a project that utilizes immersion, interactive mapping, and 3D visualization technologies to create an educational web-based platform focused on sustainability. It aims to make environmental awareness more accessible and enjoyable for a diverse audience.

How we built it

Project Development Technologies Used

  • Cesium Map: Leveraging the power of Cesium for dynamic and interactive maps, providing users with a seamless navigation experience.
  • Google Map API and 3D photogametry Tiles: Integrating Google 3D tiles to enhance the visual representation of sustainable practices and challenges in a three-dimensional context.
  • Web Aframe library and other js libraries: Utilizing cutting-edge web frameworks to create an immersive and enjoyable user interface.
  • Bing maps
  • Google's Environment API

Challenges we ran into

Data Integration: Trying to ensure accurate and up-to-date sustainability data integration posed a significant challenge. Trying to integrate AR and VR: Striking the right balance between displaying information in various was a challenge. Compatibility: Ensuring cross-browser compatibility and optimal performance, especially when integrating diverse mapping technologies, presented technical challenges that demanded creative solutions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Being able to eventually submit even after a series of doubts on if this project was worth submitting.

What we learned

Learnings Throughout the development process, several key learnings shaped the project. Understanding the intricate balance between developing for VR. Exploring the capabilities of Cesium maps and integrating Google 3D tiles opened up new possibilities, enriching the user experience and the depth of information provided.

What's next for GeoExplorer: Mapping Sustainability

Continued development is planned to enhance Enviromaps and incorporating Artifitial Intelligence and apply user feedback, expanding the datasets of sustainability information, and documenting the process taken to get to the point of feeling confident about submitting.
