Inspiration
We were inspired by the idea of leaving notes for other people to read.
What it does
The app allows you to leave a message at a specific place in the world. Then anyone with the app who walks over that same location will be shown your message. You can search for nearby messages and follow a compass to seek them out.
How we built it
We used the Android APIs for the client side and JavaEE Servlets for the server side.
Challenges we ran into
We had a great deal of trouble organizing the Android app into a usable design pattern. The inaccuracy of Android location services proved to be another hurdle, as being able to pinpoint a location is crucial to our project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of learning not one but two new libraries in one night. We set reasonable goals and worked together to accomplish them all before the deadline.
What we learned
By working on this project we learned how to use JavaEE, as well as learning Android design patterns. We also discovered that seemingly simple ideas can be far more complex than they originally appeared.
What's next for GeoDrop
First up is to port the app to iOS, which we have already started. Next we plan to optimize our app to minimize battery and data use. Then we just have to spread the word and build a user base!
