Inspiration

Since one company has the monopoly over map services, we decided to make OSM better to encourage competition. In order to do that we created a challenge reward system where normal users can contribute to OSM by taking photos of streets or path ways that are incomplete or incorrect on OSM. Users compete with each other to become the biggest contribute in their cities and earn rewards. We also want to encourage riding bikes instead of driving somewhere due to the scarcity of gas and worsening of our climate. So we gave more rewards to people who ride their bikes or walk to the issues.

What it does

Encourages competition in map services by letting users take pictures to improve OSM. Improves climate change.

How we built it

We used Flutter framework with Dart for the mobile application and trained our ML Model with Pytorch Lightning. For the server side we used FastAPI.

Challenges we ran into

This was our first time using Dart and it was a different language than the ones we are used to. Building an application with a language we used for the first time in a short amount of time was really challenging. OSM library we've found for Flutter was also not the best way to implement what we envisioned for our app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our ML Model is accurate at evaluating pictures of streets. Learned a new programming language and a framework and built a project with it, opening the doors of mobile development to us. Since almost everyone has a phone these days, we can reach a lot broader audience.

What we learned

Although we used the language for the first time, we've learned that in order to truly learn a language and get better at it one has to build projects with it. We've struggled during the process but it has helped us a lot more than plainly reading the documentation like a text book or watching someone else build a program with it - as useful as those methods can be -.

What's next for GeoCorrectr

We have a lot of great ideas for our app that we still need to implement. We believe it can really become big and encourage people to ride bikes and/or go outside, while also making competition flourish in the industry. They can get cool prizes for it as well!
