Geo-Guard Emergency App

Inspiration

We were inspired by our own experiences of commuting on congested roads with bad traffic. We thought of providing a service that would alert the community in a timely manner. Often, there is a delay in informing and notifying passengers of incidents. With so many social media platforms, it's hard to keep track of information. Centralizing all the information on one platform would help individuals in crisis find help quickly. we recognized the critical need for a tool that can save lives by connecting people in distress with timely assistance.

Sometimes ambulances or other emergency services take a long time to get at the scene of an accident, but with the help of our app, instead of waiting for the ambulance, police. people can simply mark the emergency on the map and submit the emergency form after logging in. So far, we have implemented the majority of the functionality, but in the near future, we will integrate online push and email notifications so that if someone reports an emergency, an alert can be generated; eventually, we will limit the alert to people in nearby areas. We will also develop a PC and Android version of this application, and it will be an open source project to which anyone is welcome to contribute.

What it does

Geo-Guard Emergency App is a full-stack application designed to provide swift assistance during emergencies. The app offers the following key features:

Automatic Location Detection: The app automatically selects the user's current location on a map, ensuring accuracy and speed in times of need.

  • Custom Location Selection: Users have the flexibility to choose a different location on the map if necessary.

  • Emergency Reporting: In the event of an emergency, such as accidents or fires, users can add a description of the situation and press the submit button.

  • Real-time Visibility: Leveraging Socket.IO and MongoDB, the app displays accidents and their descriptions on the map in real-time. This information is accessible to all users of the app. Currently, Socket.IO implementation is under way due to shortage of time, but MongoDB and Auth and the submission of an incident are fully implemented.

  • Web Push Notifications: The app will send web push notifications to alert users about emergencies in their vicinity, enabling them to offer help or seek assistance quickly.

  • Future Expansion: We are considering implementing email notifications using AWS or Firebase in the future to further enhance communication and response during emergencies.

How we built it

The Geo-Guard Emergency App was built using a Full Stack development approach. We utilized technologies such as:

  • Frontend: [Next JS, React, Material UI, Microsoft Bing Maps]
  • Backend: [Next JS, Node JS, MongoDB, Socket IO, Google Auth]

Challenges we ran into

Building a real-time emergency response app presented several challenges, including:

  • Integrating Socket.IO for real-time updates.
  • Designing an user interface for ease of use during emergencies.
  • Ensuring the security and privacy of user data.
  • Handling scalability to accommodate a large user base.
  • Keeping with the time to implement our idea to a real working project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The Geo-Guard Emergency App is a joint effort to combat road safety issues in communities, while providing a dependable and robust notification service. Our project is still in development, but we are working diligently to incorporate additional features that will enhance the current system. Our accomplishments thus far include:

  • A reliable app that has been built by communities for communities, which can aid other public services such as ambulances. Every user can contribute useful information to assist in saving lives during emergencies.

  • The seamless integration of real-time location updates through the use of Bing Map API.

  • The efficient delivery of user notifications for rapid response, allowing for real-time road safety updates.

  • A scalable architecture that can accommodate future growth and is built with frameworks that can easily integrate with other technology tools.

What we learned

We have gained valuable knowledge and experience in Full stack software development, specializing in real-time geolocation data and maps, through the development of the Geo-Guard Emergency App.

Our team has achieved valuable insights into:

  • Implementing server-side and client-side rendering to enable trusted users to log in/sign up and contribute information to the map.

  • Managing and securing sensitive user data by storing and retrieving it through the MongoDB database.

  • Enhancing the user experience by providing a simplistic user interface that allows for a user-friendly experience, especially during times of crisis.

  • Collaborating as a team to address complex challenges and brainstorm ways to give back to our local communities.

What's next for Geo-Guard Emergency App

The journey doesn't end here. We have exciting plans for the future of the Geo-Guard Emergency App, including:

  • Expanding our user base to reach more communities.
  • Adding additional features, such as email notification and voice recognition for emergency reporting,
  • Exploring partnerships with emergency services and organizations so they can directly use the app as a source of current emergencies.
  • Further enhancing user security and privacy measures.
  • Validating that a submitted emergency is real and not a fake one using the images submitted
