Inspiration

Every dentist runs into the same wall: a patient needs treatment, but they can't picture the result. "Trust me, it'll look great" only goes so far. We watched dentists lose cases not because the treatment was wrong, but because the patient couldn't see where they'd end up. We wanted to close that gap — to let a patient look in a mirror of their future smile before they ever say yes.

What it does

GenSmile is an AI smile-simulation and practice platform for dental clinics. A dentist takes or uploads a patient's photo, and in seconds GenSmile generates a realistic preview of their potential smile — alignment, whitening, gap closure, and more. Beyond simulations, it gives clinics the tools to actually run the workflow around them:

  • AI smile simulations generated in seconds from a single photo
  • Patient document & intake forms — customizable, printable, and fillable by the patient or the doctor
  • Doctor-to-doctor sharing — send a case to a colleague via a secure, view-only link for a second opinion
  • Practice tools — patient case management, multi-clinic and staff support, and subscription billing

How we built it

GenSmile is built on a modern web stack — Next.js (App Router), React, Tailwind CSS, deployed on Vercel. The AI simulations are generated through Google's AI image-generation service, with image processing handled on our own cloud infrastructure on AWS. Billing and subscriptions run through Stripe, and the product ships as both a web platform and a native iOS app.

Privacy was a first-class design constraint, not an afterthought: simulation images are processed in real time and not retained, and every flow where a photo is sent for processing asks the user's explicit consent first.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest problems weren't the AI — they were the realities of shipping a health-adjacent product. Handling sensitive facial and patient data responsibly meant building explicit consent into the app and being precise about what we store and share. Getting the native app through strict app-store review pushed us to tighten our privacy disclosures, our purchase flows, and our data handling until they were genuinely airtight. And designing an interface a busy dentist could actually use mid-consultation forced a relentless focus on speed and simplicity.

What we learned

That trust is the product. In dentistry, a tool is only adopted if the clinician trusts it with their patients and their reputation — so transparency, consent, and reliability mattered as much as the AI itself. We also learned how much friction a single clear visual can remove from a conversation.

What's next for GenSmile

Deeper clinical integrations, richer treatment-specific simulations, expanded doctor-to-doctor collaboration, and bringing GenSmile to more clinics worldwide — so every patient can see their smile before they commit to it.

GenSmile is live!

Excited to share that GenSmile is now live on both the App Store and Google Play.

GenSmile is an AI smile-simulation tool for dental practices — a dentist takes a patient's photo and gets a realistic preview of their potential smile in seconds, making treatment conversations easier and helping patients decide with confidence.

What we've shipped so far:

  • AI smile simulations generated from a single photo
  • Customizable patient intake forms (patient- or doctor-filled, printable & shareable)
  • Secure doctor-to-doctor case sharing for second opinions
  • Subscription plans with in-app purchases

What getting here taught us: Passing strict app-store review pushed us to make privacy and consent genuinely airtight — sensitive facial data is processed in real time, with explicit in-app consent, and not retained. Privacy ended up being a core feature, not a checkbox.

What's next: Deeper clinical integrations, richer treatment-specific simulations, and getting GenSmile into more clinics.
