We wanted to provide useful information to scientists to better visualize genomic data. It filters out unnecessary information and displays it in a branching graph that can be zoomed in to investigate individual base pairs, and zoomed out to view the sequence more holistically. We investigated vg and determined it to be a perfect output path. Vg creates "gene graphs" to visualize variations in genomes. Using bedtools, we subtracted the parents variations from the child's variations to find what was new in the child, which could be useful for the scientists. We then filtered this for homozygosity. We had challenges with installing bedtools, vg, and managing large data files, as well as converting between file formats, such as .bed, .vcf, and .vg. We are proud of our python programming to refine information, as well as our visual tool for viewing final sequencing data. This was an awesome experience that taught us a lot about genome sequencing, filtering data sets, and working as a team in a time crunch. The next step to creating a full Genie tool is to fully integrate our visualization system with a full, operable UI. We had a great time working on this project.
