Inspiration

Everyday students file into their classrooms with looming questions preoccupying their minds regarding their exams. Standardized testing can be difficult for some students -- manifesting in stress, high cortisol levels and anxiety. Individualized teaching approaches have been recognized effective means of connecting with academically struggling student demographics. From this observation, the Genie Tutor was born.

What it does

Genie Tutor collects individual student exam data and utilizes this information to personalize additional exams based on their performance. These tests include tailored questions to areas students struggle the most with to help build up their knowledge base on shaky concepts. Poor performances on standardized exams can link to decreased confidence and consequently declining academic performance among students. To mitigate such consequences, Genie Tutor seeks to uplift students by presenting personalized curriculum and questions adapted to students' academic needs and past performances -- building up their intellectual confidence.

How we built it

Together, we developed an algorithm that analyzed each student's exam data and utilized that information to tailor personalized exams for them. We then designed a user-friendly interface for student and teacher access to navigate the resources available. We used the GPT-3 model developed by OpenAI by integrating the API in our algorithm to process the natural language that the user input. Also, the model was used to determine the chapters where the questions could be core scientific concepts could be find and it works afterward on finding similar questions that test the same concepts to check if the students understood the concept correctly after restudying it.

Challenges we ran into

It is important for us that the product is accessible to individuals of diverse technical backgrounds and literacy levels. The program can be applied across diverse schools and educational landscapes which consequently requires intuitive design and easily navigable information. These were challenges while constructing the project that we prioritized.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Genie Tutor highlights the rudimentary ideas behind successful knowledge comprehension and streamlines a new personalized exam preparation approach with heightened accessibility for students with diverse learning needs.

What we learned

Throughout the process of building the project we were able to learn a great deal regarding APIs and OpenAI models. Drawing on the TreeHacks workshop regarding establishing a successful startup, we also learned the driving factors behind monetized projects. As we developed our project, we learned that access to reliable and quality education materials are often restricted to particular socio-economic domains and sought to bridge this gap by establishing an inclusive and accessible program framework. And finally, working in a team dynamic accentuated the value of collaboration and teamwork in developing innovative solutions to complex problems in education.

What's next for Genie Tutor

In our future endeavors, we are looking to refine our algorithm to further cater to students with learning disabilities and establish additional features such as live feedback and multi-media learning pathways to further customize the student experience. We are also looking to partner with schools to track student achievement for a prolonged period of time while using the program to note additional areas for improvement.
