Inspiration

The inspiration behind Genetics Genie stems from our passion for Biology and making science accessible to all. Whether you are a high school student try to grasp the foundations of genetics or a teacher looking for interactive tools to enhance your lessons, Genetics Genie was created to bride the gap between complex biological concepts and simple applications.

What it does

Genetics Genie is an all-in-one solution designed to provide users with intuitive tools for exploring various aspects of biology. It features:

1.) BMI Calculator: Quickly and accurately calculates your Body Mass Index 2.) Monohybrid Cross Simulator: Helps visualize Mendelian genetics by simulating Monohybrid Crosses 3.) Dihybrid Cross Simulator: Analyze and predict the inheritance of 2 traits simultaneously 4.) Child Height Predictor: Estimate the potential height of a child based on the parents' heights

How we built it

Genetics Genie was built using the programming language Java 8 and utilized java.swing for the GUI.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge we encountered is creating the GUI for this program, java.swing is quite outdated and it building the UI was tedious. This is why we used the help of ChatGPT for this section of our program.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of how accurate our tools are, specifically our Child Height Predictor and our BMI Calculator and how these calculations are applicable to real life scenarios and backed my medical science and research.

What we learned

We learned the importance of time management working on this project, our estimate was roughly 2 hours but in reality, it took us 3 - 4 hours to complete this project.

What's next for Genetics Genie

We want to make Genetics Genie accessible to everyone. We are planning on creating a website where all our tools can be publicly accessed.
