Inspiration

There are several children on the streets of Jakarta and in rural areas who are malnourished, do not have access to proper sanitary supplies, lack of educational resources and especially a lack of guidance. I was inspired by my pen pal from Indonesia who I talk with regularly in a program to help her practice communicating in English. She told me about this major problem that she saw and I worked with another friend in Indonesia to support an organization that would help these children, leading to the creation of Generous Kitchen.

What it does

Food Drive - Generous Kitchen provides children in elementary schools with goodie bags full of nutritious food. You can donate money or food using the information on our website. COVID-19 VACCINES - Generous Kitchen has also helped children get access to COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic as personal health is very important for children. There are videos on property sanitation on our website, INDOPALCHAT-Generous Kitchen also has an online chat program where children in Indonesia can talk with pen pals from all around the world and within Indonesia to help them develop social skills and support mental health.

How we built it

I planned it on Figma and then worked on coding it using the design I had created along with finding online resources for inspiration on the structure.

Challenges we ran into

I had a major problem with time as I was working solo and I had very little time to spend on the project compared to the big goals I had for the website. Another challenge was that the competition was in a different time zone so it was difficult to keep up with announcements. Finally, the last major problem was my lack of experience with advanced coding as I still consider myself a beginner so I used minimal libraries which would have enhanced my website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am really proud of the home page because it is exactly how I envisioned it to be. I also spent the most time working on the home page and especially working on the slideshow to make it aesthetically pleasing but functional.

What's next for Generous Kitchen

Generous Kitchen has already helped many individuals in Jakarta and I hope that we continue to do so. Next steps include finishing our official website and launching it to the public, applying to be a non-profit and working towards the logistics of the IndoPalChat program.
