📱 GenerativeSAT – AI SAT Prep, Built on a $60 Phone

✍️ The Idea

GenerativeSAT is an AI-powered web app that generates unlimited SAT practice questions in real time. I built it entirely on my $60 Android phone — because I believe that expensive test prep shouldn't be the only path to a good score. It’s personal: I’m a student who couldn’t afford fancy courses, so I coded my own solution. Now anyone with a browser can practice with fresh questions, get instant AI explanations, and track their progress, all in a clean, futuristic interface that runs on the cheapest devices.

🧩 The Problem (and Why It Hurts)

Every year, over 1.7 million students take the SAT. But quality prep is a luxury:

  • Kaplan/Princeton Review courses: $1,000+
  • Tutors: $50–$200/hour
  • Free apps: limited question banks → students memorize answers, not concepts

Low-income students score 200+ points lower on average — not because they’re less capable, but because they lack access to effective practice. I’ve lived this. My $60 phone is all I have, and I refused to let it hold me back. But millions of others don’t have the time or skills to build their own tool. They need something ready to use, right now.

💡 The Solution: AI That Meets You Where You Are

GenerativeSAT turns any browser into a personal tutor.

How it works:

  1. Pick your mode

    • Full SAT – timed test with breaks, just like the real thing
    • English or Math – focus on one section
    • ⚡Flash – quick, 8/6‑question modules
  2. AI generates fresh questions on the spot
Using OpenAI, the app creates realistic SAT questions you’ve never seen before. No more repeating the same 50 problems from a fixed bank.

  3. You answer, we explain
Select an option, get instant feedback, and click “Explain This Question” to see a step‑by‑step AI breakdown — why the right answer is right, and why the others are wrong.

  4. Track your progress
Scores are saved locally. You can review past tests, see where you struggled, and focus your practice.

All of this runs smoothly on any device — my $60 phone loads it just as fast as a flagship. The interface is glass‑morphism, smooth, and built for small screens.

📈 A Realistic Business Plan

I’m not just building for fun — I want GenerativeSAT to grow and reach the students who need it most.

Phase 1: Launch (MVP – done)

  • Free web app, core features live
  • Gather feedback, refine AI prompts
  • Build a community (Reddit, TikTok, student forums)

Phase 2: Freemium (months 3–6)

  • Free tier: 5 Tests/day, basic explanations
  • Premium ($4.99/month): Unlimited Tests, advanced analytics, progress history, priority AI explanations
  • School accounts: $199/year per school – unlimited students, teacher dashboard

Phase 3: Expansion (year 2)

  • Add ACT, AP prep, and other standardized tests
  • Offline mode (PWA) for students with spotty internet
  • Partner with non‑profits like Khan Academy or Code.org to distribute free licenses

Revenue streams:

  • Subscriptions (individuals)
  • Institutional licenses (schools, libraries)
  • Affiliate links (college prep books, scholarships)
  • Ads on free tier (non‑intrusive, education‑related)

Why it’s sustainable:
Low overhead – just a server, API costs, and my time. With 10,000 active users, even a 5% conversion to premium covers costs and funds development.

🎯 Who It’s For

Primary users:

  • High school students from low‑income families who can’t afford traditional prep
  • International students applying to U.S. colleges (where SAT prep is often scarce)
  • Self‑motivated learners who want flexible, on‑demand practice

Secondary users:

  • Teachers looking for a free classroom tool
  • Tutors who need extra practice materials for their students
  • Parents seeking affordable options for their kids

Market size:
The global test prep market is $1.1 billion and growing. Over 60% of students say cost is a barrier to quality prep. GenerativeSAT directly addresses that gap.

❤️ Why This Matters

I built this on a phone that cost less than a pair of sneakers. Every line of code was typed on a cracked screen, sitting on my bed, after school. I’m not a CEO or a team of engineers — I’m just a kid who needed a better way to study.

GenerativeSAT is proof that you don’t need a MacBook and a Stanford degree to build something that matters. If it helps even one student afford their dream college, it’s worth it.

And sometimes, those dreams are coded on a $60 phone.
