Inspiration
To understand how to build a scalable, cost-effective, and secure cloud-based solution that can consolidate multiple years of school data and provide dashboards showcasing trends and insights for better policy making.
What it does
The system takes the data files from access database that are providing enrolment data for several years. Using that data the system can show the trend of enrolment pattern, can easily ingest data for future years and use the same visualization report to analyse the students data. The system has been designed in such a way that it will not cost much yet be very useful tool for data insight.
How we built it
First we studied the database that had all the information about the different tables loaded with students’ records. Then we identified which tables can be important as decision makers for the generation of the enrolment trend. After identifying the required tables, we had to find out a way to import the info into the azure workspace so that we can use the data visualization on the data. After the data was set up we used azure synapse analytics and Power BI to design and develop the system.
Challenges we ran into
The challenge was to understand the pricing. Initially the whole account of $200 ran out within 2 days.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I could finally figure out how to make it cost effective which is a very important feature in the project. Also I learnt a new visualization tool of Power BI.
What we learned
I learnt a new skill, azure synapse analytics and Power BI in a very short time period.
What's next for General Problem Statement from Vertex Ventures
The current project is just the beginning of a big and useful project. To make this more effective we need to add the following features. a. To use a parameterised pipeline to ingest data for multiple years. b. To understand from users what other features are required to be analysed c. To use ML to predict next year enrolment d. To understand what unexpected features can increase the estimated cost over a whole year time. e. To build dashboard with an enterprise level Power BI to visualize all aspects of students’ enrolment including whether enrolment depends on a particular geographic area, demographics, teachers in the school, it’s a public school or charter school etc.
