Describe your project
Morii, a combination of the concept memento mori and the Japanese gates Torii, is a representation of the desire to capture a fleeting experience. As humans, we live our lives through moments, captured in the stories we share with others, but as time passes, these memories begin to fade. Morii works to create more of these moments, encouraging users to make memories with others through a food-centered scrapbook. Users will capture photos and upload them onto a scrapbook as they add notes to imprint their memories both digitally and physically.
We often struggle to express ourselves, so we let the food speak for us. Morii works to capture those unwritten 'I love yous' found in a shared recipe or a crowded dinner table. It turns fleeting flavors into an artifact, ensuring that the warmth of a meal, and the people who shared it, is never truly lost to time.
Describe your research process and findings. If you conducted any surveys or interviews, please include the survey form and/or interview questions here. If you conducted secondary research by pulling from online sources, please include a link to your sources.
Our research process included a survey to collect sentiments about eating meals with family, as well as individuals' reservations about conflicts with people outside their generation. We gathered a total of 138 survey responses.
From our survey link, we noticed that a large portion of our respondents ate meals with their family at a frequent rate (5 or more times a week), finding value in spending time at least once a day with one another to talk about how the day was. However, a majority of respondents stated that they believed that the generational gap was caused primarily by a difference in opinion or values. What was more interesting was that this answer was consistent across all generations, with many also wishing that other generations could understand their perspective/history and the struggles that come from it. Despite this, a majority of respondents rated the closeness of their family very highly, with the average of all 138 respondents being a 7.64.
From this information, we were able to conclude that there is a general sentiment to spend time with our families, regardless of whether individuals believe there is a generational divide. While there is no direct solution to fixing the generational differences, values, and opinions, we can work to create environments that promote better relations between generations. This drew us towards focusing on food, as many responses also noted how spending time to eat meals together as a family helped to make individuals feel closer, as they felt more informed about the livelihood of every person in their family.
Building on top of that, with the fact that many individuals in the younger generation believing that their parents did not know how to properly express or understand the conversations that younger generation wished to have with them, we defined the central product idea of our app: Morii is a scrapbooking experience designed to promote connection through the universal language food, sharing stories and memories through cuisine that supports generational contact by providing an accessible yet engaging interaction.
Describe your most important design decisions. What research findings and/or user testing results led you to make these decisions?
Simplified UI toggle: We wanted to make our app more accessible for all generations regardless of how tech savvy individuals may be. Our research indicated that a large generational divide was technology, and we wanted to provide the opportunity for younger generations to share their entries with older demographics. By incorporating intuitive design ideas that the younger generation is more used to (like swiping pages or closing overlays), we also created an option to display simpler UIs powered by buttons that are clear and concise reducing friction in the usage process for older generations.
Minimalistic Interface: The main idea behind our app is to promote spending time with others through meals, and a large concern brought up by older demographics was the usage of phones or the lack of attention/intention during meals due to technology. So as a means to reduce time spent on the app we created a more minimalistic interface to promote simple, quick visits to the app and prioritize the time we spend with our loved ones before time slips away from us.
Collaborative Scrapbooks: Placing fun stickers, writing extra notes, or designing an aesthetic page for an instagram story, the collaborative function of the scrapbook supports the interests of various groups, allowing individuals to share their own experiences and eventually print them out to solidify their memories forever. Inspired by use cases of younger demographics to want more aesthetic photos or designs on their feed, it serves the dual purpose of providing content they want more of while promoting interaction with the people around them.
Sealing and Printing: As nice as it is to have hundreds of incredibly aesthetic Instagram stories, for older demographics a big concern was passing on their stories and memories for the future. Sealing a notebook permanently closes it emphasizing it’s influence and moment in time. Users then have the opportunity to get their scrapbooks printed and delivered to their doorstep where each page can be flipped through as each shared meal can be reflected and relived over the coming years.
