Inspiration

We live in a world where AI is mostly trapped in text boxes. I wanted to break that barrier. I was inspired by the idea of a digital guardian—an AI that doesn't just "chat" but actually sees the physical world to keep people safe. Whether it's an elderly person living alone or a busy parent, I wanted to build an assistant that has eyes and ears to intervene when it matters most.

What it does

How we built it

The project is a multimodal powerhouse built on a React Native mobile frontend and a Node.js backend.Vision Stream: I used react-native-vision-camera to capture frames at a rate of $f = 1 \text{ FPS}$, optimizing for both detail and low latency. The Brain: The core is the Gemini 3 Flash model. It processes the visual tokens and audio stream simultaneously.Infrastructure: The backend is hosted on Google Cloud Run, using WebSockets to maintain a persistent, low-latency connection between the user and the AI.

Challenges we ran into

The most significant hurdle was Multimodal Latency. Synchronizing high-definition video frames with real-time audio meant managing high data throughput. We had to ensure: Latency = T_{capture} + T_{upload} + T_{inference} < 600{ms}. To achieve this, we implemented a custom frame-skipping logic in React Native, sending only the most relevant visual data to Gemini 3 Flash. Another challenge was Ambient Noise Filter; we had to fine-tune the Voice Activity Detection (VAD) to ensure the agent only responds to intentional user commands and not background noise.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of achieving a Seamless Interruption flow. Unlike traditional bots, our agent stops talking the moment the user speaks, creating a truly human-like interaction. We also successfully integrated Function Calling, allowing the AI to not just "see" an open stove but to actually trigger a simulated emergency alert. Achieving this level of Autonomous Reasoning using the latest Gemini multimodal capabilities was a major milestone for our team.

What we learned

I dove deep into Multimodal RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation). I learned how to balance the token limit when sending image data alongside system instructions. I also mastered the art of Function Calling, teaching the AI to not just talk, but to trigger real-world alerts via APIs.

What's next for Gemini Live Vision

The current prototype is just the beginning. Our roadmap includes:Edge Processing: Moving some visual pre-processing to the device to further reduce T_{total}. Multi-Agent Collaboration: Integrating specialized agents for medical emergencies or technical repairs.Wearable Integration: Porting the React Native core to smart glasses, allowing for a truly hands-free "Guardian" experience.Long-term Memory: Using Google Cloud Firestore to help the agent remember historical visual data over weeks or months.

Project Update: The Evolution of Gemini Live Vision (Omni-Guardian) We are thrilled to share the journey of Gemini Live Vision, our submission for the Google Gemini Developer Challenge. What started as a simple camera concept has evolved into a sophisticated, real-time multimodal safety assistant.

How it Evolved Phase 1: Sensory Integration We began by bridging the physical world with the digital mind. Using react-native-vision-camera, we established a stable 10-second snapshot stream that acts as the "eyes" of our agent.

Phase 2: The Neural Core We transitioned to Gemini 1.5 Flash (and recently testing Gemini 2.5 Flash Lite) to process visual data with ultra-low latency. Our backend server now acts as a high-speed relay, managing WebSockets and multimodal prompts simultaneously.

Phase 3: Localization & Accessibility To ensure global impact, we localized the entire interface into English. The "Guardian" persona now provides calm, clear instructions in real-time, helping users navigate potential dangers like smoke, sharp objects, or accidents.
