Inspiration
We were inspired by the painful process (and sheer frustration) of losing oneself in a sea of tabs while browsing the internet. Specifically, the inefficiency and stress caused by excessive tab usage. Users tend to fear losing important information and forgetting the purpose of their tabs, hence they hoard tabs in their browsers. More time is spent (read: wasted) sifting through tabs to regain context, and this results in cognitive overload and reduced productivity, ironically adding to the user's stress.
What it does
Our Gemini chrome extension aims to reduce excessive tab-opening, by aiding users to better assess the information in a tab. The AI evaluate the current tab open and summarizes the content, without the user having to copy-paste the URL and further writing a request for the information to be summarized. The user is also able to clarify any doubts they have with Gemini to aid their understanding and learning. All these can be done without the need for hopping around tabs or opening new ones. This helps the user to stay on track, and reduces the likelihood of the user going down a rabbit hole, only to find that they have severely strayed from their original task, disrupting their workflow.
How we built it
We built this chrome extension using react, webpack, and typescript. Figma was used for drafting how we wanted our UI to look like. (spoiler alert: we did not have figma pr*mium)
Challenges we ran into
We spent the longest time narrowing down an idea for this project, for we had one too many grievances about the browser that we wished an extension would solve for us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
From brainstorming to creating, we finished the bulk of this project over a weekend!
What we learned
It was a true experience dreaming up a product to increase tab-usage efficiency, yet get utterly lost in our 5 windows, 8-25 tabs open in each, while we were doing research. This further fueled our motivation to create and further develop our product.
What's next for Gemini for Chrome +
Though this mvp version of our product looks silly for now, other than visually enhancing it, some other features that we hope to build include: tailorized summarizations, querying multiple tabs at once, saved summarization history, cross analysis across tabs, etc..
