Core Experience: Gem Buddies is a long-form progression game that blends active mining gameplay with idle automation systems, wrapped in a cooperative world-progression framework. Whether you're online or offline, your gem buddies keep working, and every player's effort makes the entire world stronger.
Inspiration Many years ago I made a game that had these awesome little gem buds, but it didnt really amount to much. I really loved drawing all these. When this project was announced I thought about breathing new life into these fun characters. But I didnt know if I would have time so I designed systems to allow them to work, if I found the time, Which.... as you just read above. yeah... this brings me to Challenges
Challenges Oh man... where do I start. Soooooo many issues with this project. I was doing a lot of new stuff to the platform, including the Global Persistante data system that was hot off the press. Just setback after setback. But my biggest issue was limited the scope. As I mentioned I wanted to put these gems in but didnt know if I was gonna be able to pull it off. Then 3 days ago, with clearly not enough time I decided to go for it and fough day and night to get it working. It didn't fully work until earlier today. But I got it. But then other issues creeped up. Custom UI was such a nightmare. I am very excited for the new system that was released. One of the reasons for such a last minute submission
Meta GenAI Is a very good tool to speed up development. I used it to make the sky box, ambient music, sound effects, etc. Having it built right into the editor is really cool.
What You'll Do in Gem Buddies
Mining & Resources - Start with your personal home base and mining plot. Use your trusty pickaxe (upgradeable through 6 tiers!) to mine five types of blocks: dirt, clay, limestone, marble, and obsidian. Each swing uncovers valuable ore and rare gem buddies. Your pickaxe auto-repairs when you return home, so you're never stuck waiting.
Gem Buddies - Your Helpful Companions - Discover cute gem buddies (Emerald, Pearl, Sapphire, Opal) while mining. Each has two attributes: Grade (D through AAA) affecting speed, and Age (Baby through Adult) affecting capacity. Upgrade them at the Gem Workshop by aging them up or combining two to increase their grade. Then assign them to your machines to dramatically boost efficiency - up to 89% faster processing and 11x larger queues!
Idle Automation - Place blocks in your Block Processors (5:1 conversion) and ore in your Ore Refineries (5:2 conversion). Your gem buddies work these machines 24/7, even when you're offline. Enable auto-add to keep them fed and auto-collect to grab rewards automatically. It's satisfying idle gameplay that respects your time.
World-Persistent Floating Blocks - This is where cooperation shines! When you collect processed blocks, they launch into the sky toward five massive floating blocks (one per block type). As ALL players contribute, these blocks grow through 5 exponential levels (5, 50, 500, 5K, 50K blocks). Each level permanently increases rare drop rates for EVERYONE, with rarer items benefiting more. Level 5 obsidian? Those gem drops skyrocket!
Dynamic Global Market - Buy and sell ore and refined ingots on a living commodity exchange. Prices shift based on supply and demand - buying pushes prices up, selling brings them down. Prices naturally drift back to equilibrium every 12 hours. The genius part? It's world-persistent across ALL instances. A trade in one world instantly affects the global market, creating real economic gameplay.
