As all of us really enjoy receiving Dictionary.com's word of the day, we wanted to make something similar but with facts. I personally am a connoisseur of well curated bites of knowledge so we wanted so make an application to assist others with similar passions.
How it works
Users "subscribe" to the service by putting in their email address into our online form. Then, every day at 6 am, they will be emailed 25 of the top posts in the subreddit Today I Learned, which contains many interesting facts collected from legitimate sources.
Challenges we ran into
We had a lot of things we didn't know before we started working on this project. All of us were only proficient in Java but we sadly never wrote a single line of Java code in the entire project :'( . In addition, none of us had advanced knowledge of Python (which we used to write the program) but we also had trouble making PHP and Python interact in the desired way. It was also challenging to set up the PHP webpage that we used.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
EVERYTHING! We were so happy when we finally got this thing up and running using languages we didn't know very well.
What we learned
A lot of new languages, team bonding skills, and how to Google everything.
What's next for Geddit for Reddit
