Inspiration

Pixel art has always been an important visual language in video game culture. From classic handheld consoles to modern indie games, pixel art carries a unique nostalgic feeling and artistic charm.

However, creating beautiful pixel art can be challenging for beginners without drawing experience. Traditional pixel art creation requires a lot of skills and time, including pixel placement, color selection, shading, and style consistency.

GB Gen was inspired by a simple question:

"What if anyone could easily transform their own photos into professional-looking pixel art?"

That idea led me to create GB Gen — a simple and accessible image-to-pixel tool that helps beginners create beautiful pixel artwork without requiring professional artistic skills.

What I Learned

While building GB Gen, I learned how to transform complex image processing techniques into a simple and enjoyable creative experience.

Pixelization is not just about reducing image resolution. Creating good pixel art requires careful consideration of:

  • Preserving important visual information from the original image;
  • Selecting the right number of colors and palettes;
  • Recreating the visual style of classic gaming devices;
  • Making the result feel artistic instead of looking like a simple mosaic effect.

This project helped me understand that a great creative tool is not only about powerful technology, but also about making creativity accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

How I Built It

GB Gen combines image processing algorithms with an intuitive user interface, allowing users to quickly transform ordinary photos into pixel artwork.

Users can import JPG images or videos and customize their creations using adjustable controls:

  • Pixel Size
  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Dithering
  • Hue / Saturation

GB Gen also includes carefully designed retro-inspired color palettes, including classic Game Boy aesthetics, CRT display effects, and other unique pixel art styles.

Instead of learning complicated graphics software, users can simply adjust a few settings and create their own personalized pixel artwork.

Challenges

The biggest challenge was finding the right balance between preserving image details and maintaining an authentic pixel art style.

Simply reducing image resolution often creates a basic mosaic effect, while keeping too much detail removes the simplicity and charm of pixel art.

To solve this problem, I experimented with different color quantization methods, dithering techniques, and palette designs. Through continuous iteration, I created a pixel conversion workflow designed specifically for beginners.

GB Gen aims to become a bridge between everyday users and pixel art, allowing more people to experience and enjoy retro digital creativity.
