Inspiration

Who doesn't love rubbernecking! It's fun: you're outside, staring at things you don't normally see. Like TV but REAL.

What it does

Gawkworthy is a website that lets users post and view geotagged spectacles near them. After signing in, the user can browse around on a Google map of their current location to find the spectacles near them (displayed as pins on the map). By clicking or tapping on the pins, the user can view details about the spectacle, and see an image if the original poster shared it.

Users can post their own spectacles, automatically tagged with their current location. They can add a title, description, and a url of a photo to display. Then, they set the 'expiration', when they think the spectacle will be gone so it doesn't sit on the map forever. They can also set a 'post after' time, so they have enough time to get away before the crowds of rubberneckers start arriving!

How we built it

Build in python and javascript (with a bit of bootstrap to keep it from looking too appalling. with flask and flask sqlalchemy. Uses Google Cloud compute VM for hosting and the Google Maps API.

Challenges we ran into

We tried to have an Android app to go alongside the website, but after a dozen hours of frustration, it wasn't completed. Time was also a major constraint, which kept us from being able to add more features.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I finally got over my anxieties of working with geographical data. The website is relatively functional and is quite fun to use.
