Inspiration
Our teammate Skyler had initially come up with the idea to create a platform where you can meet new people. We then collectively agreed to make it campus-based so that students at UF have access to an app that helps them meet fellow gators.
What it does
GatorLocator is a way to make friends and navigate through your new social circle! With this app, you can find like-minded individuals with not only the same interests but also similar personality traits through our tailored matching system. Whether youβre a freshman looking to meet new people or a senior wanting to diversify your friend group, this app makes it easier to connect with nearby university students on campus.
How we built it
We used Python for our backend and the platform React for our frontend. We also used databases to push our backends to connect users.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into were trying to connect our backend and frontend without ever doing that before. We also had to figure out how to use different languages and bridge them together, while also using new platforms like Pandas and React.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The fact that we were able to create an application at our first hackathon is a big accomplishment for us itself. Although it was frustrating at times, we were able to overcome multiple barriers that we had never encountered before.
What we learned
We learned what languages can't and can be used to bridge backend and frontend together. Most importantly, we learned patience and the importance of planning. Researching deeper on our topic and gaining more knowledge would be very helpful for executing future projects.
What's next for GatorLocator: Where Friendship Blossoms
We want to expand GatorLocator's horizons not only by making it available on other UF campuses but as well as other universities.
